    What is Balda?

Balda (Балда) is a classic word game that has been played for generations across Russia, Ukraine, and the rest of Eastern Europe. It is usually played on a square grid of empty cells with a starting word already placed across the middle row. On each turn a player adds a single letter to an empty cell, then forms a brand new word that runs through that letter along connected cells. The longer the word, the more points you earn. It is the kind of game families play on paper, and now you can play it online.

Balda in English, free in your browser

Most versions of Balda are in Russian or other Cyrillic languages, which makes the game hard to pick up if you speak English. Grida is a free, English-language version of Balda that runs entirely in your web browser - on desktop, tablet, or phone. There is nothing to download and no app store to visit. Open the page, start a match, and you are placing letters on the grid in seconds, building everyday English words instead of Cyrillic ones.

    Three ways to play Balda

Want a quick brain teaser on your own? Play a single-player Balda match against a computer opponent that places letters and claims words just like a real player. Prefer company? Start a two-player game or invite up to four people to a live multiplayer match on the same board. You can also set up a private room and play a word game with friends by sharing a single link - everyone takes turns in real time, and every letter you place opens new paths for the whole table.

    Simple rules, deep strategy

Balda is easy to learn but hard to master. The scoring is simple - you earn points equal to the length of each word you claim, so a six-letter word always beats a three-letter word. The challenge is reading the board: the best players place letters that set up their own long words while blocking the paths their opponents need. New to the game?
